Goth-Rock (deathrock, coldwave, darkwave)

80'ler Post-punk kuşağının, ''karanlık'' dozu yüksek gruplarını tarif etmek için ortaya çıkmış bir tanımlama Goth-Rock. ( İlk defa Tony Wilson tarafından Joy Division için kullanılmıştır)

O dönem gruplar, bu tabiri (Goth) pek kabul etmezler. Çünkü müziği isimlerle adlandırmak yaratıcılığı kısıtlayabilir. Bu konuda haklılar. Ama şimdilerde bu tanımlamalara ihtiyaç duyuluyor, duymak istenilene daha kolay ulaşılabilmek adına...

    

Goth-rock olarak adlandırılan grupların soundlarında ortak bir anlayış vardır. Bu birkaç istisna dışında çok değişmez. Monoton davul ritmleri, Drum Machine'ler (Suicide'a övgüler...) Chorus gitar, bass soundu. Soğuk ve donuk bariton ses tonlu vokaller ya da glam/proto-punk mirası efemine, ağdalı vokaller; Ian Curtis, Andrew Eldritch, Robert Smith, Carl McCoy, Peter Murphy, Rozz Williams, Siouxsie, Gavin Friday, Andy Sex Gang, Olli Wisdom, Lux Interior... Kökler: (Jim Morrison, David Bowie, Alan Vega, Iggy Pop, Brian Ferry, Steve Harley)    

 

   

    

Bu akıma ilham veren grupların en önemlileri; 
Suicide, The Stooges, Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Kraftwerk... gibi dönemin yenilikçi proto-punk ve erken dönem Alman elektronik oluşumlarıdır.

İngiltere Leeds çıkışlı, kuruluş tarihi 1979.

Etkilendikleri isimler:  The Stooges, Suicide,Velvet Underground, Motörhead, The Birthday Party...

Andrew Eldritch önderliğindeki grup birçok eleman değişikliği yaşadı. İlk dönem sarkılarda büyük katkısı olan Gary Marx grubun ilk kaybıdır. Gary Marx gruptan ayrıldıktan sonra gothic rock sahnesinin önemli gruplarından Skeletal Family solisti Anne Marie Hurst ile beraber Ghost Dance isimli projeye ağırlık verdi.

İkinci kayıp ise en iyi Sisters albümü First and Last and Always kadrosundan, gitarist Wayne Hussey ve basçı Craig Adams. Gruptan ayrıldıktan sonra Hussey ve Adams The Mission Uk'i kurdular ve çok başarılı albümler yaptılar. Sonraları Sisters'da özlenen hava The Mission Uk ile devam etti...

First and Last and Always;

(Bu albüm bir başyapıttır ve çok fazla grubu etkilemiştir. Tüm şarkılar efsanedir. Goth-Rock marşı Marian , intaharsal speed kafası; Amphetamine Logic, Black Planet, No time to Cry, Walk Away...)

Floodland;

Sisters of Mercy bu kayıplardan sonra Post Punk sound'undan uzaklaştı. Daha endustriyel etkili Floodland albümü ile yoluna devam etti. Floodland baştan sona Eldritch imzasını taşır ve oldukça iyi bir albümdür. Bu albümle Eldritch yalnız başına da neler yapabileceğini kanıtlamış oldu.

   
Dip not: Bu albümde gruba eski The Gun Club üyesi, etkileyici gotik güzellik Patricia Morrison dahil oldu. Albüm kapağında ve video cliplerde ön planda gözükse de aslında gruba pek katkısı olmamıştır. 

     
Vision Thing;

Gruba bascı olarak efsane grup Sigue Sigue Sputnik ve ilk dönem punk gruplarından Generation X (Billy Idol'ın eski grubu) basçısı Tony James dahil oldu. Bu albüm de iyi bir albüm olmakla birlikte First and Last.. ve Floodland'deki lezzeti sunmaz. Hard rock sosu albümdeki yerini almıştır. Tıpkı sonraki albümlerinde, post-punk/gothic rock çizgisinden uzaklaşan The Cult, Gene Loves Jezebel, Balaam and the Angel gibi. Ama Sisters bu gruplardan farklıydı hep. Andrew Eldritch'in soğuk bariton vokali ve en kadim dostu, grubun daimi üyesi Doktor Avalanche'in (drum machine) endustriyel bir makina gibi çalışması sayesinde...

Bu albümden sonra grup, plak şirketlerine tepki olarak hiç albüm yayımlamadı. Dönem dönem single'lar yayımladılar. Andrew Eldritch hala formda ama şimdiki grup elemanları konusunda aynı şeyleri soylemek zor...

      Bu hafta Dark Entries'de, geçtiğimiz yıl Fransız label Infrastition Records tarafından yayınlanan Ian Curtis'i anma albümü var. Abümde 80'li yıllardan günümüze Fransız Coldwave sahnesinin nadide isimleri bulunmakta. Ben çok sevdim. İflah olmaz tüm Joy Division meraklılarının da seveceğini düşünüyorum.
